TEMPERATURE OR DRAWING - A heat treating operation or reheating hardened steel to a temperature less than the critical temperature. Tempering usually increases the toughness and lowers the hardness of the steel. T-Joint - A joint produced when two members are located approximately 90° to each other in the shape of a “T”. Thoriated Tungsten - GTAW tungsten electrode with small amount of thorium added. Improves arc starting and provides for use of wider current range. Three-Phase - When an electrical circuit delivers three cycles within a 360° time span, and the cycles are 120 electrical degrees apart, it is a three-phase circuit. TIG - The abbreviation for Tungsten Inert Gas. A shop term for the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding process. Torch - A device used in the GTAW process to control the position of the electrode, to transfer current to the arc, and to direct the flow of shielding gas. Transverse - A measurement made across an object, or basically at or near a right angle to a longitudinal measurement. Travel Angle - The angle at which the torch is positioned from the perpendicular as the weld progresses. Travel angles are usually 5° to 15°. Tungsten - Rare metallic element with extremely high melting point (3410° C). Used in manufacturing GTAW electrodes. Tare Weight – The weight of an empty cylinder without cap and valve. Threshold Limit Value (TLV) – TLV’s are measures of toxicity established by ACGIH. The TLV of a substance refers, in general, to airborne concentrations at or below which nearly all workers may be repeatedly exposed without adverse effect. Threshold Limit Value – Ceiling (TLV-Ceiling) – Refers to an airborne concentration that should not be exceeded even instantaneously. Threshold Limit Value – Short Term Exposure Limit (TLV-STEL) – Refers to a 15 minute time-weighted average exposure which should not be exceeded at any time during a workday even if the time-weighted average is within the TLV. It supplements the 8 hour TLVTWA for certain substances that produce acute effects on high, short term exposure. Threshold Limit Value – Time Weighted Average (TLV-TWA) – Refers to the timeweighted average concentration for a normal 8 hour workday and a 40 hour workweek to which nearly all workers may be repeatedly exposed, day after day, without adverse effect. Tied-Diaphragm – See “Attached Poppet.” Tied-Seat – See “Attached Poppet.” Total Hydrocarbon Content (THC) –THC is used to describe the quantity of the hydrocarbon impurities present. Usually expressed as methane equivalents. Toxic – A substance that has the ability to produce injurious or lethal effects through its chemical interaction with the body. Triple Point (tp) – The definite temperature and pressure for a pure substance at which the three phases (solid, liquid and vapor) coexist in equilibrium as an invariant system.
